One of the best ways to maintain your sobriety is by attending 12-step meetings on a regular basis. Meetings like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are where other recovering addicts meet to discuss their experience, strength and hope to help one another stay sober one day at a time. The people understand the feelings you’ve had and what you’re going through now, so they’re the best ones to share your story with when you’re having a rough day.
Addiction is more than simply drinking and using drugs, addicts must also change their way of thinking. The strongest trigger recovering addicts endure are their own emotions, so being around others who have gone through similar situations and will give you guidance. The recovering addicts in AA and NA also work the 12 steps to recovery, which helps addicts get down to the causes and conditions of their disease while working on living a better life in recovery to strengthen relationships and learn how to cope with life on life’s terms.
Rehab Support Groups
If you’ve been through the drug rehab process, the facility most likely has an after care program that you can attend. You’ve most likely already seen how beneficial the rehab process can be, so these after care programs are there so the alumni can meet on a regular basis to discuss life in sobriety. These types of groups are often run by a counselor from the treatment center, which is beneficial to keep track of your progress in recovery.
When a counselor sees that you’re struggling in sobriety, they will be there to give you help by recommending different ways to deal with your current troubles. This may involve seeing a psychologist that specializes in addiction or going to a sober living home.
