3 Diet Changes to Make if You Have High Cholesterol

High cholesterol can put you at serious risk of heart disease, so it is not something that you should ignore. Your doctor can prescribe you medication for your high cholesterol, but it’s also a good idea to make changes to your diet. Luckily, if you make these adjustments to the way that you eat, you are sure to see that your cholesterol levels will drop on their own, with or without medication.

1. Decrease Your Saturated Fat Intake
Animal fats, dairy fats and other saturated fats should be consumed in extreme moderation. These are some of the main natural produced fats that are not good for you and that can cause your cholesterol levels to rise. Instead, it is best to consume unsaturated fats, such as those that can be found in olive oil.

2. Eat Soluble Fiber
Your body needs fiber, and you probably make an effort to consume it every day. What a lot of Americans do not realize, however, is that there are different types of fiber. The best type of fiber to help you stay healthy and to help with your cholesterol is soluble fiber. Luckily, it can be found in lots of healthy, good foods, such as oats, fruits, beans and lots of your favorite vegetables. Bulk up on these foods to see better cholesterol levels and better overall health.

3. Eat Low-Fat Dairy
Dairy is good for your body in moderation, but unfortunately, full-fat dairy can be filled with fats that aren’t good for you, particularly if you have high cholesterol. This is when you should switch to low-fat dairy. Not only do you not have to worry about as many fats, but you can also enjoy one of the main healthy ingredients that is included in dairy — whey protein. Another great way to consume more whey protein is by purchasing a supplement at your favorite health food store, which you can add to a glass of water and take each day for added health benefits and lowered cholesterol.

By making these diet changes and making an effort to exercise, you should be able to reduce your cholesterol naturally. This obviously does not mean that you shouldn’t take the cholesterol medication that has been prescribed to you by your doctor, but it is a good way to get healthier and to help reduce your risk of heart disease.
